Artist Statement

Mahala Mrozek was born in 2001 in Seattle, Washington. They are currently a senior receiving their BFA in Fiber at Maryland Institute College of Art. Their work centers around creating domestic decor and wearables, aimed at transporting the viewer into intimate and imagined realities. Their high-craft handmade objects are inspired by family heirlooms and traditions and invite viewers to touch and interact with their pieces to better connect with the process behind the work. To facilitate the connection between viewers and their work, Mahala makes the characters inhabiting these spaces distinctly nonhuman and animal-like, creating a more welcoming subject for the viewers to project their own understanding onto.

Mahala’s most recent focus is creating an immersive experience for the public, on display in May 2024 for MICA’s annual Artwalk. This exhibition will be an accumulation of works made over the course of their time in college, and allow viewers to completely enter and be surrounded by their imagined realities. Mrozek currently lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland.
